Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a Cool Keeper device?
Cool Keeper is an intelligent device that is mounted near an outdoor air conditioning unit. This device allows Rocky Mountain Power to turn the air conditioning compressor off for a few minutes each half-hour during selected weekday summer afternoons. This can help reduce strain on the power system.
- How does Cool Keeper work?
On selected weekdays during the summer, June through August, we'll automatically coordinate participating air conditioners to balance the supply and demand for electricity. When Cool Keeper is activated, the central air conditioning unit's compressor will run for a few minutes less each half-hour. The cool air will continue to circulate so your tenants stay comfortable. There is no charge for the installation and service of the Cool Keeper device. If your tenants are not satisfied, we will remove your tenants from the Cool Keeper program at no cost, upon request.
- How often will the Cool Keeper device be activated?
Cool Keeper typically turns the air conditioner's compressor off for only a few minutes per half-hour from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on selected summer weekdays, and never operates on holidays or weekends.
- Will Cool Keeper affect your tenants' comfort level when activated?
Most customers report they don't even notice the typical temperature change of only 1 to 3°F in their home or business.
- Who is eligible to participate in Cool Keeper?
Cool Keeper is available to residents and small businesses along the Wasatch Front who have electric central air conditioning.
- How does Cool Keeper benefit my community?
By helping to keep our power infrastructure viable, Cool Keeper lessens the inconvenience and concern caused by strain on our electric grid. Plus, balancing the demand for electricity helps keep costs down by reducing the need to produce or purchase expensive peak power. In addition, as a thank you, we will give participants a $20 credit on their fall Rocky Mountain Power bill.
- How does the annual bill credit work?
Customers who participate will receive an annual $20 thank-you credit on their Rocky Mountain Power bill each fall. A partial credit is applied for participation after the start of the cooling season (June 1) as follows: before July 1, the bill credit will be $15; before August 1, the bill credit will be $10; and before September 1, the bill credit will be $5. Participants who enroll after September 1 will receive their bill credit the following year.
- Does your tenant need to be present when the device is installed?
They do not need to be present when the device is installed near the air conditioning unit. Just be sure the outdoor air conditioning unit and electrical safety box are accessible to our technicians.
- If your tenants are not satisfied, can they cancel their participation?
Yes. If they are ever dissatisfied, upon request they can leave the program at any time, at no cost to them. 98 percent of participants report they are satisfied with the program.
