Frequently Asked Questions

How does Cool Keeper work?

When you enroll in Cool Keeper, we'll connect a device next to your exterior central air conditioning unit. On a few selected weekdays during the summer, June through August, we'll automatically coordinate participating air conditioners to help manage the demand for electricity. There is no charge for signing up and installation of the Cool Keeper device is free.

What is a Cool Keeper device?

The Cool Keeper device is connected to your exterior air conditioning unit. It receives a signal from Rocky Mountain Power to turn your air conditioning compressor off for a few minutes each half-hour during selected weekday summer afternoons. This helps manage electricity demand during times of peak usage.

How often will the program be activated?

The Cool Keeper program typically operates on a few selected weekdays from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in June, July and August. The program is not activated on holidays or weekends.

Will my comfort level be affected during activation?

The air conditioning fan continues to circulate the cool air in your home. Most customers do not notice the typical temperature change of approximately 1 to 3 degrees.

What if for some reason I don't want my air conditioner controlled on a day when the Company is managing loads under the program?

Call the program at 1-800-357-9214 and ask to be removed from that day's control event. You are allowed up to two such requests per season (June 1 through August 31) before being removed from the program for non-participation.

Who is eligible to participate?

Cool Keeper is available to Rocky Mountain Power residential and small business customers along the Wasatch Front with electric central air conditioning.

Do I need to be home when the device is installed?

The device will be installed near your outside air conditioning unit, so it is not necessary for you to be at home at the time. Just be sure your outdoor air conditioning unit and electrical safety box are accessible to our technicians.

How does Cool Keeper benefit my community?

Participating in Cool Keeper is a way for you to help manage peak demand for electricity, use energy wisely, and make the most efficient use of the existing electrical system.

How does the annual bill credit work?

Residential customers who participate will receive an annual $20 thank-you credit on their Rocky Mountain Power bill each fall. A partial credit is applied when enrollment begins after the start of the cooling season (June 1) as follows: Sign up for Cool Keeper before July 1, the bill credit is $15; before August 1, the bill credit is $10; and before September 1, the bill credit is $5. Participants who enroll after September 1 will receive the full $20 credit in the following year.

Can I cancel?

While more than 98 percent of the program participants are satisfied, if you become dissatisfied, you can ask to leave the program at no cost. However, you will no longer be eligible to receive the annual $20 bill credit.
