What You Should Know...

What is a Cool Keeper device?
Cool Keeper is a device that is connected to your outdoor air conditioning unit. This device allows Rocky Mountain Power to turn your air conditioning compressor off for a few minutes each half-hour during selected weekday summer afternoons. This can help reduce strain on the power system.

How does Cool Keeper work?
When you enroll in Cool Keeper, we'll install a device next to your exterior central air conditioning unit. On selected weekdays during the summer, June through August, we'll automatically coordinate participating air conditioners to balance the demand for electricity. When Cool Keeper is activated, your central air conditioning unit's compressor will run for a few minutes less each half-hour. Your cool air will continue to circulate so you stay comfortable. There is no charge for signing up and installation of the Cool Keeper device is free.

How often will the Cool Keeper device be activated?
With Cool Keeper, your air conditioner's compressor may be turned off for a few minutes per half-hour from 2 to 8 p.m. on summer weekdays. The program never operates on holidays or weekends.

Will Cool Keeper affect my comfort level when activated?
Most customers report they don't even notice the typical temperature change of 1 to 3°F.

Who is eligible to participate in Cool Keeper?
Cool Keeper is available to residents and small businesses along the Wasatch Front who have electric central air conditioning.

How does Cool Keeper benefit me?
Rocky Mountain customers use most of their electricity in the summer. As the area grows and more customers buy central air conditioners, demand for electricity reaches higher and higher peaks in the summer, putting a strain on the power system. This makes electricity more precious and more expensive. The increasing customer demand for electricity requires the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars to expand the capacity of the electrical system. Participating in Cool Keeper is a way for you to use energy wisely and make the most efficient use of the existing electrical system.

How does the annual bill credit work?
Customers who participate will receive the annual $20 credit on their Rocky Mountain Power bill each fall. A partial credit is applied for participation after the start of the cooling season (June 1) as follows: Before July 1, the bill credit is $15; before August 1, the bill credit is $10; and before September 1, the bill credit is $5. Participants who enroll after September 1 will receive their bill credit the following year.

Do I need to be home when the device is installed?
You do not need to be home when the device is installed near your air conditioning unit. Just be sure your outdoor air conditioning unit and electrical safety box are accessible to our technicians.

If I am not satisfied, can I cancel my participation?
Yes. If you are ever dissatisfied, you can ask to leave the program at no cost to you. Ninety-eight percent of program participants report they are satisfied with the program.
